Join Storm Bookstore for the screening of Souha, surviving Hell (2001, 56') dir. Randa Chahal, on the anniversary date of the Liberation of South Lebanon.
Synopsis :
Souha Bechara, a Christian woman from South Lebanon, has always and only known the region under Israeli occupation. During the Lebanese Civil Wars, in 1988, she attempted to assassinate General Antoine Lahd, the leader of the South Lebanon Army, an auxiliary to the Israeli Army. Lahd was left gravely injured, narrowly escaping death. Souha was consequently imprisoned and tortured at length.
She was 21 years old, and spent 10 years of her life detained at the Khiam detention center, 6 of these 10 in solitary confinement.
On May 24th, 2000, after 23 years of occupation, Israel finally retreated from South Lebanon. Souha, Surviving Hell (2001, 56') follows Bechara’s return to her village, Deir Mimas, and to the Khiam jail. The documentary is a liberating travel diary of a trip that, for a moment, let one believe in the possible reconciliation of Lebanon's country, and its liberation from Israeli Occupation.
Music by Ziad Rahbani and Marcel Khalife.
