‘At a time when other planets seem like the only place to exist for those so wrongfully othered on this one’
The Millennium Film Workshop in collaboration with FOCUS: Filmmakers of Colour United in Spirit, presents two short films and a video installation exploring sci-fi and absurdist narratives in video art from the Arab World curated by @zenz_a , followed by a discussion led by @ali.i.j.
‘In Vitro’ by Larissa Sansour is set in an abandoned nuclear reactor under the biblical town of Bethlehem that has been converted into an enormous orchard. Scientists are preparing to replant the soil above using heirloom seeds collected in the final days before the apocalypse. While up in space ‘Moonscape,’ by Mona Benyamin, takes the form of a music video for a ballad/middle-of-the-road song. The song traces the story of Dennis M. Hope, who claimed ownership of the Moon in 1980 and founded the Lunar Embassy, a company that sells land on a variety of planets and Moons; a connection is made between his story and that of the director, a young Palestinian woman living under the Israeli occupation, longing to end the misery of her people in any way possible. These short black-and-white films explore notions of displacement, nostalgia, and despair in alternative or absurdist realities.
These two films will be screened in a one-off show featuring a video installation by architect and digital artist Sami Samawi, composed of AI-generated animations of Arab Futurism.
