ONLINE: They Do Not Exist

The film consists of 9 panels, or chapters, each preceded by a title. The film revolves around the bombing and destruction of most parts of the Nabatieh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, as well as the story of a girl who sends a simple gift to a guerrilla fighter.

The film’s title is inspired by a statement by the Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir, who said about the Palestinian people, “They do not exist.”

If the Palestinian people do not exist, then who are they bombing with planes? Or are they targeting ghosts?

The film includes a clear reference, through the use of music, to the issue of the conflict over Palestine as a civilizational conflict, as a conflict between one civilization invading another. Oriental music (the music that accompanies Umm Kulthum’s Rubaiyat al-Khayyam) is used with scenes of life in the camp, in contrast to Bach’s music that accompanies the bombing operations from planes.
