Abu Laila’s day begins with the sound of shattering glass. He surveys his home, where everything appears normal, but the tense soundtrack reminds us that appearances are deceiving. Indeed, when Abu Laila drives out in his yellow taxi, Ramallah appears calm, even beautiful. Yet as Abu Laila’s day grows more complicated (even though his purpose that day – to buy a birthday cake and a present for his daughter – is quite simple), we see how peace in Ramallah is an illusion.
