Next Monday! Join us at @maydayspace as Visualizations of Revolution resumes screenings with Everything is Under Control: The Films of Abounaddara. We’ll be watching selected shorts from the vast archive of Abounaddara, a Syrian video collective that released weekly films throughout the over decade-long Syrian Revolution-turned-Civil War.

Founded in Damascus in 2010, Abounaddara produced what they deemed “emergency cinema,” a cinema of immediacy released amidst the dust storm of history. In doing so, the collective has challenged hegemonic control over image-(re)production and the West’s addiction to miseryporn, while simultaneously redefining the presupposed notions of what “documentary” and “news” are.

The screening will be followed by what I hope will be a wide-spanning discussion pertaining to some of the major news stories from the last few months, including the rapid collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the (supposed) ceasefire in Gaza, what a second Trump presidency means for a swiftly changing SWANA region, and more.
