Souha, Surviving Hell - Brooklyn

  • Selva 1329 Willoughby Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11237 United States (map)

Monday! Join us for our weekly film series “Visualizations of Revolution” hosted by @_cannes68.official . This week, we have a special guest curator @yasmina.tawil and will be screening the 2001 film “Suha, Surviving Hell.” Keep reading for more info on the film…

The subject of Chahal Sabbag’s film is the charismatic Souha Becharre, whom many call the “fiancée de Liban.” In 1989, at the age of 21, Souha—a devoted communist—agreed to attempt the assassination of Lebanese General Antione Lahad, who was collaborating with the Israeli Army in the South of Lebanon. Lahad survived, but Souha was quickly arrested and thrown in Khiam prison, where she spent 10 years for the attempt on Lahad’s life. Conditions in Khiam were horrific, and Souha endured six of those years in solitary confinement. Chahal Sabbag follows Souha in the months following her release, as she tirelessly travels Lebanon—speaking about her experiences at Khiam and searching for others who were imprisoned there. And despite all she suffered in Khiam, Souha is a survivor who shares her story with a sense of hope for the future—both her own and that of Lebanon.

We are also proud to announce that starting this Monday, Selva will be the pickup spot for all your @johnny_hummus orders. Swing by and get your hummus, stay for a drink and catch the film! Hummus pickup will be biweekly on Mondays at Selva moving forward!
